Do You Like Geeking Out?

I am a geek of serious pedigree. I tick the major geek boxes — roleplaying games and CCGs, watching anime, reading science fiction and studying computer science. Most of my friends are similarly geeks.

When discussion came up of how to raise some money for my campaign, we naturally turned to our geek roots. During my time as University Liberal Club President at CDU, we raised a lot of our money through events tuned to geeks: Freedom LANs. It worked quite well.

In that spirit, my campaign team (aka “my mates”) are organising a Magic: The Gathering™ booster draft. I haven’t actually played Magic since highschool, but apparently booster drafts are a lot of fun and they will help raise funds for the campaign.

For our first draft tonight we have 11 players, and we’ll be having drafts for the next 4 weeks. If you want come along, express your interest in the comments box below or get in touch with Steven Garstone: garstones@ntn.newsltd.com.au .

Update:

A roaring success. The next Booster Draft will be next Tuesday evening from 5.30pm.

Help from mates is great, but it will not be enough by itself. I’d like to know if you have any other fund raising events planned, perhaps for a more broad crowd. As good as it is appealing to the “geek” or “nerd” crowd, it will not get you the wide spread attention you’ll need if you are going to pull this election off.

I guess all i am trying to say is, while the booster draft was fun and it will help your campaign funds. You will need more. Normally this is where I would suggest some ideas but i am drawing a blank. However if anyone else comes up with other ideas that’d be really helpful.

Probably it will come down to door knocking and talking to people. I’ve also spoken to some folk whose research shows that volunteers at a booth are good for a 2% primary vote boost, so that should be my priority.

Yeah, great in a little suburban electorate with 6-7 polling booths. I believe I have around 100. Only the two majors manage to staff most of them for most of the day. I have a committed team of 3… Reading your blog every day with interest.
